there is one major flaw to your argument.
that is your definition of Altruism.
the altruism you're talking about is group altruism, and you're right in saying that sort of altruism has lead to many atrocities committed in the past (including nazi germany). but,there is another form of altruism. a humanist, rational altruism. if an altruistic body considers ALL people, not just those in your group, as equaly deserving of altruism. This is the sort of altruistic behaviour that still holds hope. altruism driven by equality of ALL people, that DISCRIMiNATES AGAINST NO-ONE

with the sort of empathy that is possible today with global communications and unprecedented access to knowledge, maybe this new form of altruism can exist?
